Now retired — and with the authority of someone who knows elite soccer inside and out — Monreal spoke with AS about the upcoming Champions League final between Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal and Luis Enrique’s PSG. He does so as part of Global Ases, a player‑representation agency where he uses his experience to help guide today’s footballers.

He found out he was in the starting XI, played a blinder and the team beat the league leaders 2-0 - and he scored in his first appearance for the txuri-urdin. "First game here in Donostia, in front of my new supporters, a great game against Atlético and everything turned out well, so I'm sure you can imagine, I'm very happy, I couldn't ask for more", Monreal said.

Nacho Monreal deserves to extend his stay at Arsenal beyond this season, according to boss Unai Emery. Spain international Monreal has started three Premier League matches under Emery, crucially scoring the equaliser to set up a maiden Arsenal win for the former Paris Saint-Germain coach as West Ham were beaten 3-1 last month. The 32-year-old confirmed this week that he is in talks with the Emirates Stadium hierarchy and Emery is keen to keep his countryman aboard.

Little debate about Lopetegui's Spain squad

Lopetegui announced his Spain squad for the World Cup in Russia, and there's little or nothing to debate. One interesting thing was the fact that in a poll the night before 23 players were picked by our readers and 22 turned out to be correct. The only difference is Monreal, as a substitute left back, going in place of Marcos Alonso. I'm sad for him, a player with an impressive pedigree, but nobody can argue that the decision is unfair. Just as they wouldn't have been able to had it been the other way round. As someone said to me a long time ago, depending on the position, the difference could be just two percent. But only one person decides, as fairly as they can, based on their best knowledge and understanding.

Spain scored four goals against Macedonia in Granada. Three more points and some savings in the bank for the final goal difference, which could count if we finish tied on points with Italy, who beat Lichtenstein by the same scoreline. But it wasn't a game to get excited about for Spain. A frankly tame first half, constantly smashing into the Macedonia defence, without sending the right and left backs out to open up the pitch, and a somewhat better second 45, thanks to the tiredness that always comes upon teams who try and close the match down. The most startling thing though is that, with very little on offer, Macedonia created chances against us. The few times they crossed the half-way line they ended up with dangerous opportunities. De Gea didn't have a night off.

An awkward night well negotiated by Spain. That's how you could sum up their assignment in Albania, who (as expected) parked the bus, sat back and waited for us. Mindful the hosts were only going to play one up front, Julen Lopetegui saved himself a man in defence and sent his side out in a 3-4-3 (with Sergio Ramos, Gerard Piqué and Nacho Monreal at the back); it didn't quite work, though. They pressed Albania, sure, but lacked the penetration out wide usually brought by the full-backs. They pushed hard through the middle, with Thiago Alcántara in sharp nick and slipping in some lovely balls. But it wasn't easy. Yet again, Spain worked the goalkeeper very little given the degree of their domination.
