Bayern Munich and Inter Milan: 40 years of World Cup final dominance

On 11 July 1982, at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium in Madrid, a streak began that is still in force 40 years later. It started, unbeknown to us at the time, as both Bayern Munich and Inter Milan were represented in the final of the FIFA World Cup in Spain, and has continued to the current edition in 2022 as Argentina face France for the ultimate prize.

Up until Italia 90, CONMEBOL's World Cup qualifying format had three groups, two groups of three teams and one group of four teams. For USA 94, there were two groups of five, with eight matches for each team. But since France 98, CONMEBOL is now a league between the 10 South American teams, with a total of 18 matches. This means more TV money for CONMEBOL, but also more travel involved for the players who play in Europe. There is also transoceanic travel to deal with, moving from summer to winter or vice versa in a matter of hours. Sooner or later the situation had to explode and it finally has, especially with the Premier League.

On 9 June 2018, there was a 'revenge match' between former players from the Brazil and Norway national teams - many of whom had faced each other a couple of decades earlier during the group stage at the 1998 World Cup in France. Ronaldo Nazário was involved but this time, not out on the pitch but as coach of the Canarinha, while Roberto Carlos played at left-back, as he had done in Marseille in 1998. At half-time, Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos were pictured chilling out inside the Brazil dressing room, both of them cheerily puffing away on cigarettes. It was a photograph which caused a great deasl of reaction at the time and also criticism from some quarters, but years later, it has become almost iconic.

So much so, a specialist collector of football shirts has spent close to 100,000 euros in obtaining the Holy Grail of all memorabilia: the shirt which Zizou wore in the 1998 World Cup final against Brazil in which Les Bleus were crowned world champions.
